To me “Textile” means - colour, texture and visual aesthetics of fabric. It has always been a part of me since my early childhood years in Uzbekistan. Growing up in a country surrounded by full of heritage and handmade goods or gathering with school friends to make each other hand made gifts, I was surrounded by craft which has inspired me and lead to passion in textiles.
Moving to London and being away from home for so long made me appreciate our traditions. After I started learning to weave, I came across to our traditional clothes made from ikat fabrics which grew my curiosity and I decided to use as my archive for inspiration. Ikat is an old technique originated from Indonesia, which is used to create natural pattern by resist dyeing on the yarns prior weaving the fabric. It’s a technique also widely used in part of Central Asia, including Uzbekistan. Since learning about ikat, I have been studying to combine both modern and traditional techniques together to create unique work of art.
My creative practice includes hand dyeing fabrics or yarns, weaving on table loom and creating surface patterns through card winding. The highlight of my practice is using silk and cotton yarns which draws me to produce fine quality work since the materials themselves are unique. Most of my inspiration comes from nature and architecture.
